Sorry, but I have to begin with that, in case someone didn't know that yet..

Though, you really shouldn't have to worry.
(Still if your Wii becomes bricked by using this guide, I said this!)
No one has gotten their Wii bricked by installing the Homebrew Channel, anyway.
Any features or applications you run on your Wii are still at risk, though.
*More info about this later at the end of post #1.*
And before we begin, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong by PMing me/posting!

Now, let's begin!

Let's start with a small introduction of what the term Homebrew means.

The creation of any software for a console.

In this FAQ and Guide I'll explain to you how to run Homebrew on your Wii. (A.K.A your Compiled applications in .Dol or .Elf files) I'll also explain how the Wii works, including the "terms" the Wii uses.

What do I need?

A Wii Console from Nintendo. (Not a Vii! - a 3rd party fake Wii look a like console.)
May a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)*
An SD Card
An SD card reader for your PC!

*= You don't need The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) anymore. Since BannerBomb is out there. And only requires a SD Card.

I'll explain about Bannerbomb later in the guide how to get it. You must put it onto an SD card.

(You can also install the Homebrew Channel running Homebrew Channel Installer with a Mod Chip, but you will need the Fake Sign bug in your System Menu - IOS.)

First, get ready to install the Homebrew Channel.
Posted Image

For users below 3.0*. | For 3.4*2 Wii users:
*= It is recommended to update to 3.0 or above.(Lower than 3.0 won't work.) (3.2 Is the most recommended, and best for both Homebrew and your Wii(WiiWare) at the moment.)

*2= Every time you restart, the Twilight Hack will be deleted by the Wii itself. (Yes, on 3.4 only!)

3.0 to 3.4 users have TWO ways to boot Homebrew and install the Homebrew Channel! (Without mod chip and Fake Sign bug.)
You only need a SD Card or both an SD card and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess disc.

3.5 to 4.1 users have ONE way to boot Homebrew and install the Homebrew channel!
You only need a SD Card.

---

Option one is:

BannerBomb by Comex
Site: http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/
Works with all Wii's from 3.0 to 4.1.
(3.0 , 3.1 , 3.2, 3.3v1, 3.3v2, 3.4, 3.5 (3.5-Is Korea only.) 4.1)
You'll only need a SD Card!

Download a version thing from Comex his site. (Mostly like the aad1f version will work.)
All the versions you can download are here: http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/aads/

Extract the zip, open the map than copy the private map to the ROOT of your SD Card.
If you already have a private map on your SD Card, you have copied other things to your SD Card already. Than only copy the 'aktn' map located here: aad1f\private\Wii\title\'aktn' to SDroot:private\Wii\title\. ;)
But copy all other channel maps to your PC, and remove them. If you have more Channels on your SD Card next to BannerBomb and you will go to the SD Card menu, via Data Management. It will just freeze.

Now if you have done that, put a boot.dol at the root of your SD Card.
(A Homebrew application called LoadMii can list more .dol files, like the Homebrew Channel... )

Now, start your Wii go to Data Management -> Channels -> SD Card.
(Make sure the BannerBomb channel is the Only channel on the SD card! Else it will just freeze.)
You will get a load screen that will look like this:
http://adr990.myhyrule.net/newicobannerbomb.png
Yes to "Load the .dol."
No to "Just look at the BannerBomb channel on your SD Card."
http://adr990.myhyrule.net/newicozorBannerbomb.png
No, you can't copy/move* this channel.

move* = only at 4.0 or above you can move.

[Homebrew Channel Installation Works with all Wiis, from 3.0 to 4.1!]*

*= I'll explain the installation after this Option two.

---

Option two is:
Twilight Hack made by Team Twiizers.
Works on all Wii's from 3.0 to 3.4.
(3.0 , 3.1 , 3.2, 3.3v1, 3.3v2, 3.4*) (*=3.4- The save always will be removed by a restart/turn off, of the Wii console.)

Get a copy of the game: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
Play it at least once to make a save account.

Now, eventually backup your Zelda save to your SD card and then to your PC.
Then get the Zelda Twilight Princess Hack save from here:

Quote

The Twilight Princess Hack just in case you don't already have it:

3.3 and earlier: twilight-hack-v0.1-beta1.zip
(MD5: 63ce2af59ba28f2507e0c5c2da60720b)

3.4:twilight-hack-v0.1-beta2.zip
(MD5: 4b4eae530dc94d6f1710b0a96bf9e00f)

Which version you will need:
http://adr990.myhyrule.net/FIN-TP_Hack-INFOv2.png

http://adr990.myhyrule.net/TPHakcs.png

http://adr990.myhyrule.net/NEWMiniTPHacklogo.png

Now, go play Zelda TP Wii with this Save Hack copied to your Wii. Play on the 'Twilight Hack' account and talk to the man closest to you or walk backwards. You will see some Text coming up and after a very short while, the boot process of the boot.elf will start. If you had the boot.elf/.dol of the Homebrew Channel Installer in the ROOT of you SD Card, the installation will start!

---
http://adr990.myhyrule.net/NewHBCinstallfin.png

Works with all Wiis from 3.0 to 4.1.
(3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3v1, 3.3v2, 3.4, 3.5(Korea-only.), and 4.1)

Now that you've done one of the above ways to Boot Homebrew, to launch the Homebrew Channel installer use the link below

The newest and recommended Homebrew Channel installer:

Installation:

Step 1:
Turn on Wii.

Step 2:
Run an Exploit, which I explained above.

Step 3:
Boot the boot.elf/.dol of the Homebrew Channel Installer.

Step 4:
Follow the steps onscreen:

http://adr990.myhyrule.net/newhackmiiselecthbcinstal.png
=---=

The DVDX Installer is only useful if you're going to use Emulators with ROMs on DVDs. (You will need Mod chip.)
Or Watch DVD Movie's via The Homebrew Application: 'MPlayer'. (That is really cool, since original Wii's can't watch DVD Video's)

Do you have any questions?
Feel free to ask!

---

I recommending you read this:

Since now that you can run un-official applications and may just be a wild human, I recommending you to install these 'Brick-Protection' applications.
http://adr990.myhyrule.net/NewModLogo.png

Starfall/StartPatch:

It's a very small modification.
The patch is mostly used to jump into the 'Recovery Mode' of your Wii.
(This small modification can also be used for Region-free game play and hacks and such.)
You MUST turn on Update Blocker! If you update with a USA game on an EUR Wii, then the Wii will get USA things to merge with EUR things and it will semi/fully brick the Wii.

3.2 Edition(Starfall) only works on PAL(EUR) and NTSC(USA) Wiis!:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Starfall

MyHyrule.net mirror: Starfallv0.5

4.1 Edition(StartPatch) works on PAL(EUR) and NTSC(USA) and JAP(JAP) - mot on Korea Wiis!:
http://gbatemp.net/i...4071]StartPatch v4.0 - Gbatemp://http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showto... v4.0 - Gbatemp

MyHyrule.net mirror:
StartPatch - 4.0.3 - PAL
StartPatch - 4.0.3 - USA
StartPatch - 4.0.3 - JAP

The above patch installer hacks are easy to install. But have a [u]very low brick protection]/u].

It is way better to install Preloader & BootMii.

(Preloader with BootMii IOS + Boot2 in combination is the best! If you are only being able to install BootMii IOS then ALSO install Preloader... or else the BootMii IOS will never get a chance to load and unbrick your Wii, IF you bricked your Wii.)

Preloader:
Works with Wii System Menu 3.2 and 4.0 and 4.1

You should install Preloader anyways.
It is brick protection and you can add system menu hack safely. (It won't be patched in the system menu, just temporally, you can easily turn things off or add some, with a 'hacks.ini' on the Root of your SD card.)

You can change a lot via the Preloader settings, like:
The IOS the system menu will use.
Ignore WiiConnect24 if you shut down. (No more orange light.) Wi-Fi will still work.
Autoboot System Menu
Autoboot Preloader
Autoboot File (A homebrew file)
And a lot of other things

(NOTE: Read everything clearly! If you are drunk or have taken drugs, don't start any of these installations.)
Note2: Preloader 0.29 includes an April Fool's joke on April 1st. It will say something that will make you think your Wii is bricked. IT IS NOT! You can change the Wii date via your Wii Settings before April 1st or leave your Wii off for the whole day, since it doesn't turn on properly for that day. (I know, I know... But I see the humor side of it!)

Here you can find Preloader:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader

Here you can find some hacks for System menus:
http://wiibrew.org/w...Preloader/hacks
(There are some really good ones!)

BootMii:
This one is an even better brick protection but, it doesn't have 'hacks' and that is why you may want to install Preloader, too. BootMii loads before Preloader which means you have even more 'brick-protection'.

(NOTE: Read everything clearly! If you are drunk or have taken drugs, don't start these installations.)

Installation is explained on the websites and the application itself...

But still:
(NOTE: Read everything clearly! If you are drunk or have taken drugs, don't start these installations.)
And please note that Preloader doesn't work on 3.0, 3.1, maybe 3.3v1 and 3.3v2, and 3.4!

BootMii works on 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3v1, 3.3v2, 3.4, 3.5(Korea) and 4.0 , 4.1!
If your Wii is able to install the BootMii Boot2 and IOS, do it! It is the Best of the Best, but you still might want to install Preloader for the hacks.
(First install BootMii IOS then BootMii Boot2)

If your Wii is only able to install BootMii IOS, install Preloader, too! (Only then will you have brick protection!)
(Since the IOS installation only installs an IOS, which can only be loaded once you are in the Homebrew Channel 1.0.2 or above! And then it's finally able to load BootMii!)

And if you brick before installing those Brick Protections, you really should PM me or post here. Then I will most likely be able to find a way to unbrick your Wii!
If I can't unbrick your Wii, then contact the coder.
If you still can't unbrick, contact Nintendo.

I'll talk a little about the Wii Terms here.

A long explanation of the IOS and cIOS Terms.
GBA-Temp Topic

Wiibrew.org Wiki IOS explanation

My own and short explanation of the IOS and cIOS Terms.

IOS= Initial Operating System

cIOS= custom Initial Operating System

IOSs are like parts of the Firmware that the system menu, channels, and games use.

There are about 256 slots to store IOSs

IOS version History Wiibrew.org

IOS16 is now officially released in the 4.0 update.

Six unofficial ones have also been released. (Those are not called cIOS, just IOS, because they didn't overwrite/patch the original IOSs from Nintendo...)
IOS202
IOS222
IOS223
IOS249 - IOS249*
IOS254

NOTE We do not support piracy. We buy our games because we love Nintendo and their job! We are just warning you for IOS 222 & 223 that they are only meant to use USB Backup loader. The Backup loader can be used for illegal stuff... so don't install nor use them!

IOS202 = Used to install a few things to activate the USB 2.0 software in the Wii. (Your application can only use USB 2.0 by calling this IOS.)
IOS222 = Used by USB Loader & YAL Channels which are USB 2.0 stuff.
IOS223 = Used by USB Loader to make it able to use more USB ports while you already use one for the HDD and playing a game.
IOS249 = Used by most applications as WAD Manager and Soft Mods.
IOS249* = There are Two versions of the IOS249 The above one(Waninkoko) and this one by Tona, the Tona one is the PatchMii one installed as IOS249.
IOS254 = The PatchMii(A.K.A PatchMii Core.) IOS, also used by DVDX*, will run 'custom' updates. PatchMii will let you play DVDs via a homebrew application. PatchMii Core will also play DVDs on a Hard Modded Wii. (For both of them you will need DVDX) More info can be found here: Wiibrew.org

DVDX*= Is a 'Hidden Channel' that will install on your Wii. (Just like EULA etc...)
DVDX is not really a 'name'... it is really more of an 'ID*' since every ID should be a 4-digit size.
But you can sometimes fit it in really nice.
More info about this here: Wiibrew.org

ID* will be explained right after this.

Official patched IOSs
IOS36 - By Waninkoko - cIOS (To install revision4 and above of IOS249)
IOS37 - By Waninkoko - cIOS (To install any revision to revision3)
IOS38 - By Waninkoko - cIOS (To install revision12)
These are used to install the cIOS 249, since the newest IOSs don't include the Trucha* bug anymore.
IOS60 - By Crediar - Preloader 0.29

*Trucha I'll talk about later after MIOS.

Disc ID info:

Disc ID info
A another one with All info of it. - (Wiibrew.org)

Demos use IOS9 (ID always starts with DXXX, the Xs standing for letters/digits)
As well as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. (But ID starts with RXXX)
A few other very early Wii games also use IDs starting with RXXX. (Normal Wii game IDs always start with RXXX and end on the Region Letter -> 'P' = PAL| 'J' = JAP| 'K' = KOR) An example: RXXP

MIOS
MIOS Wiibrew.org

MIOS: M(No one besides Nintendo knows what the M stands for) Initial Operating System

cMIOS: Custom M Initial Operating System

This is the Gamecube IOS

So far 9 versions have been released. (Pikmin 2 New Play Control! is the last one I checked. Check out the Wiki below to see if there is a new one!)

Trucha bug
It is an exploit so 'hackers' could install their own stuff, like Custom IOSs and Custom Channels. Normal Nintendo has to sign this stuff... or else it won't install...

By just change some hex bytes to 00, hackers can sign their own stuff.
This will make the Wii console(With older IOS's) think this is original Nintendo code!
All the info about this here:
Wiibrew.org Singing bug

Huge explanation here:
tmbinc Singing Bug info

Other websites that talk about this: Wii-newz

Other Terms and sorted names):
HBC = HomeBrew Channel
TP Hack = Twilight Princess Hack(save hack)
ATD = Any Title Deleter
ARC = Any Region Changer
Celling cat = Power PC

Homebrew Browser: Download your Homebrew applications straight from your Wii to your SD card!
It has a very nice GUI and comes with an Icon and Meta file for your Homebrew. (The applications will be downloaded to the location Homebrew Channel uses the file location "SD:Apps/".)

MPlayer: Plays DVD Videos, SD card movie files, or USB movie files if you have DVDX installed (You also need PatchMii(core) if you have a Mod Chip.)

Gecko OS: Region-free gaming, cheating, update skip, and support for the debugging tool: USB Gecko, which is used to make screenshots and cheats etc...

I have some hints for you if you're going to use more dangerous applications on your Wii.

WAD Manager:
Installs .WAD containers on your Wii.
(Can be used to install Custom Channels, or IOSs or System menus.)
With this application be sure you don't uninstall your installed IOSs or System menus via WAD Manager!
Custom channels can banner brick your Wii, this is not a dangerous brick... but it is better to avoid a brick than to fix it.

What is a banner brick?

The Banner brick acts like this:
You'll be able to start your Wii, and pass the Health and Safety screen.
Even though the Wii is loading the Wii Menu(system menu) it will only give a black screen and sound.

Since the content of one or more of the banners was improper.

How do I fix a banner brick?

It's very easy and there are multiple ways to do so:

1. If you have TP Hack on your Wii, get 'SaveMii' : http://savemii.net/ (It costs money though, but it is way cheaper than sending it to Nintendo.)

2. On startup have a Gamecube controller in the fourth slot and press all four D-pad directions at once while a Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Wii disc is inside the Wii to boot the TP Hack save.

3. If you've already installed Preloader or BootMii Boot2 you can launch WAD Manager or Homebrew channel, and then WAD Manager, and uninstall the WAD that banner bricked your Wii.

4. With a Mod Chip: make an AutoBoot Wad Manager Homebrew disc.

Those two things will boot the 'Recovery Mode' of Nintendo.

Put in the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Wii disc and it will boot.
You can also run Homebrew to uninstall the last WAD you installed. (Never uninstall IOSs or System Menus unless you know what you are doing.)

Any Region Changer:
Don't use it unless you know what you are doing.

Any Title Deleter:
Don't use it unless you know what you are doing.

Downgrader(s):
Don't use it unless you know what you are doing.

cIOS Installers:
They are safe... but still, only install them if you know why you need it and only if you really need it.

System menu hacks:
Preloader
Starfall
StartPatch
SoftMii Tweaks

If your Wii is bricked before installing any of the Brick Protections, you should PM me or post here. I'll most likely be able to find a way to unbrick your Wii!
If I can't unbrick your Wii, then contact the coder.
If you still can't unbrick, contact Nintendo.
